"Two basic tendencies emerge from the bewildering range of styles which fall into the category of Art Nouveau style. The first shows a rectilinear, tightly composed interplay of straight horizontal and vertical lines, while the second is based on the organic dynamism of curvilinear form. In whatever manner the style manifested itself, essentially Art Nouveau is a reflection of the artists' attempts to render the objects of everyday life beautiful."
Now... technically, to actually -be- an Art Nouveau piece, it must come from the time the Art Nouveau movement was recognized; late 1800's through to early 1900's. But to be Art Nouveau inspired, requires little more than to follow the methodology listed above; to be inspired by it all.
From the looks of things, I'd say the artist here was inspired by P. Beheren's graphic design work, W. Crane's fabric illustration, or even just a simplified Mucha representation.
Really, the history, diversity, geography and style of Art Nouveau is not so simple that one can say accurately what is Art Nouveau and what is not. If the artist claims a connection to Art Nouveau, either trust the artist, or don't.
Um, okay, I'm not an art-historian, or even an art student, but I know the section of art nouveau that I'm fond of and it doesn't connect to that. So from what you've said you could claim anything is art nouveau. It's a very pretty peice, I have nothing against it but it lacks the complex background that the forground suggests it should have were it the specific sort of art nouveau that I am familiar with. I repeat, I like the peice it's pretty, but it does not connect to art nouveau to me.

And so my point still stands: if it doesn't connect to Art Nouveau - for you - then, who's fault is that?
Lacking anything but a personal link - your comment came off rather 'bitting'. And sorry - but I twitch when people toss the term Art Nouveau without real context.
Okay, I'm sorry for that, I didn't mean to be harsh, but outside interpretation can be very important. I just meant to point out that I didn't read it that way. I do know that there was a lot more to the art nouveau movement, but I have always felt that the overly decorative crazyness aspect was a big part of almost all of it. So the background doesn't do it for me. But really, I didn't mean it as a harsh on the art, it's gorgeous. I just like to say more than "LOLZ, that is so cooooool!" so I offer my honest opinion, which is what it is, like it or not.

Hey, I decided to check out P. Beheren to see what you were talking about, I can't find anything, is it spelled right? Also the search did remind me of a few artists who lacked the complexity that I was refering to. But they usually lacked it uniformly, in background and foreground...

It was bit of an ouch comment. But I see what you are saying. There are different takes on art noveau. This was inspired by the mood, the feel, of art noveau work... the calm, earthy presence. I'm not changing the title and you can see by looking at my gallery that my version of art noveau inspiration leans towards the simplification of the style. Others do the whole nitpicky crazy detail but I find it detracts with the way I do characters. They get lost. So, thanks for your opinion, but I like what I'm doing and feel it is inspired enough by the art noveau style to keep calling it art noveauish. If you want crazy detailed art noveau... look at pseudomanitou's stuff (they guy who got this thread started). He rocks the style, big time. *nods*
